An overlooked and underrated film, but one of my personal favorites is Jennifer’s Body. Despite many critics hating the film, it has become somewhat iconic to parts of this generation, with scenes such as Megan Fox burning her tongue with a lighter and saying “I am a God. “ Upon watching this movie on a summer night at my best friend’s house, I too became instantly obsessed. This 2007 film is both a parody on comic films like that of Mean Girls as well as those in the horror genre. Jennifer’s Body stars Megan Fox as the hot and popular cheerleader, Jennifer. Amanda Seyfried plays her dorky best friend Needy. They are an odd match, as Jennifer is the boss of Needy in a sense, telling her not only what to do but what to wear. One night they go to a bar to see a band Jennifer likes perform.  In between the performance and Jennifer flirting with the band members, the bar catches on fire and begins to burn down. Needy gets them out to safety by busting through the bathroom window, but ...

Superbad is a film focusing around the antics of highschool boys. This movie uses a sense of edge and at time inappropriate or vulgar humor. Not only does it use at times inappropriate comments to in a sense catch the audience off guard, there are also moments of violence and mishap that are truly unexpected. A key in comedy is the audience is unprepared for what will happen or be said. If one knows exactly what will play out it no longer becomes quite as laughable. Superbad however does an incredible job of providing the element of the unexpected along with relatability. As we all know relatability is crucial in comedy as well, for it provides the audience with a point of understanding. Anyone can reflect upon their own awkward high school experience and feel apart of this film. As with the boys attempting to purchase alcohol and the cops coming. Many can understand this fear of getting caught and charged with a fake ID, when all you wanted was to look cool to your crush, but the c...

As a child I was absolutely obsessed  with watching Tom and Jerry cartoons. Every episode was practically the same as the one before and yet I still laughed every time Tom would step on a garden rake and hit himself in the face. This again is a product of benign violation, as the hard caused to Tom is funny, but because he is just a cartoon and is not actually receiving any really pain, it is appropriate to laugh at. I’m sure had this been a really show of a living cat and mouse my elementary school self would’ve been more terrified than amused. Tom and Jerry was the literal interpretation of the classic cat and mouse relationship. Jerry was often quite smart and was able to escape his predator, while Tom never gave up the hunt. The show was quite incongruous in it’s occurrences, as to just how Tom and Jerry were able to get away with such antics, but also how they were able to commit them.  Many times the characters had sorts of weapons they would use on one another such ...

Deadpool is by far one of my personal favorite comedies. My best friend, Georgia and I found the film so incredibly hilarious, we splurged for RPX when seeing the sequel ( which I personally find to be even funnier) to laugh in comfort and style. Deadpool combines comedy and the classic superhero film like no other. Even originally as a comic Deadpool was quite out there in its bold, direct, and at times vulgar comedy style. A key thing in deadpool that sets it apart from other action comedy films is the breakdown of the fourth wall. Deadpool will often turn in the middle of scene and speak directly to the camera reflecting on or explaining his actions. This conversation with the audience allows the character to develop more of relationship with the viewer, and the viewer to feel as though they better understand Deadpool. The situations and supporting characters in these films are often times very comedic, but the real star is Deadpool himself, as he is incredible direct and sarcas...

The Good Place

I have been a fan of The Good Place since it first aired a few years back. This sitcom does an excellent job of having comical character who balance each other in the perfect way. The main character, Eleanor is wrongly placed in the good place, due to amix up in her true identity..Eleanor’s life on earth was a tad of a problematic one, and very much has a sarcastic and comical edge. Eleanor often just says things that make the audience do a double take as in the scene Abby discussed. Despite being the troubled one of the group, Eleanor is a problem solver and actually quite smart.  Eleanor’s “soulmate” in the good place is Chidi. Chidi is a man of extremely high morals and ethics; he is constantly debating upon what is the right thing to do, which contrasts Eleanor as she will do whatever it takes to keep herself out of trouble. This contrast often results in many arguments between Chidi and Eleanor,as they decide what to do next to avoid Eleanor being caught. There is also Jaso...

Blog 6: Elf

Growing up as it got colder, and closer to Christmas that meant it was time for everyone to start making Elf references, and begin begging to watch the classic holiday comedy. It’s a film one could find laughable at any age. The movie Elf follows the journey of Buddy the elf as he leaves his home in the North Pole to find his father in New York City. Buddy, being raised as an elf and not a human, is completely unaware of social norms and the way things works. Buddy’s absence of knowledge about American cultures, leads him to do things the audience would find crazy and hilarious. As Kaitlin said in her initial blog post, this creates an incongruous and benign violation type humor. Buddy is doing wild and problematic things that create a laughable chaos, but it all ultimately harmless. When Buddy first find his father, he goes into his father’s works and creates quite a scene, that is extremely embarrassing to his father, but comes across hilarious to the audience as the entire situati...

Blog 5: vine

Beyond the world of memes, and iconic tweets, Vine is certainly one of the modern ages greatest assets to humor and social media comedy.  Like all great art, Vine was not appreciated it’s own time nearly as it is now. After the death of Vine, some of its greatest products resurfaced all over social media. Thousands tweeted their favorite vines, and Youtube was filled with Vine compilations. Vines are all only 6 seconds long, so they are extremely quick humor. A vine never has to worry about losing the viewer’s attention, because just like that the clip is over. The Vine’s success is all about its quickness. They are often sharp, which leads to their quotablity. Quotability is was driving force in the lasting success of a Vine. Due to them being so quick, vines are easily memorable and catchy, leading the audience to continue thinking about the content they've just watched. Vines wiggled their way into the culture through this process. They become ingrained in the mind of the viewer...
