Superbad is a film focusing around the antics of highschool boys. This movie uses a sense of edge and at time inappropriate or vulgar humor. Not only does it use at times inappropriate comments to in a sense catch the audience off guard, there are also moments of violence and mishap that are truly unexpected. A key in comedy is the audience is unprepared for what will happen or be said. If one knows exactly what will play out it no longer becomes quite as laughable. Superbad however does an incredible job of providing the element of the unexpected along with relatability. As we all know relatability is crucial in comedy as well, for it provides the audience with a point of understanding. Anyone can reflect upon their own awkward high school experience and feel apart of this film. As with the boys attempting to purchase alcohol and the cops coming. Many can understand this fear of getting caught and charged with a fake ID, when all you wanted was to look cool to your crush, but the cops also not being the brightest and letting the boy go is unexpected. The entire situation is a mess but no one is truly harmed, this is an example of benign violation on multiple levels, the problem of the teenager illegally trying to obtain alcohol originally, but the fear of him getting caught increases the intensity of the scene and makes for a greater comic effect.  All the components of this scene work together to add an awkward sort of suspense for the viewer leading to that funny pay off. Over all this film does an incredible jobin turning common teenage experiences into great and laughable scenes, that transfer well to the audience.
